Washington DC [US], April 3 (ANI): In a rare bipartisan move, four Republican senators joined Democrats on Wednesday to support a resolution overturning President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs on imports from Canada.
Senate Vote and Republican Support
- The resolution passed by a vote of 51-48, marking a significant pushback against Trump’s tariff policies.
- Republican senators who voted against Trump’s tariffs:
- Rand Paul (Kentucky)
- Susan Collins (Maine)
- Lisa Murkowski (Alaska)
- Mitch McConnell (Kentucky)
Senator Murkowski’s Statement
Murkowski defended her vote, saying the tariffs would harm Alaskan businesses and families.
She wrote on X:
“Today, I voted to terminate the emergency declaration put in place to justify higher tariffs on Canadian imports. While not all Canadian trade practices are fair, I’m keenly aware of the negative impacts in store for Alaskan families and businesses should tariffs drive up the costs of essential goods.”
Democratic Opposition to Trump’s Tariffs
- Democrats criticized the tariffs, arguing that they would impact an estimated 6.5 million American jobs.
- They urged Trump to de-escalate the trade war with Canada, one of the US’s largest trading partners.
Trump’s Tariff Policies: A Broader Trade War
- Trump’s 25% tariffs originally targeted Canada, Mexico, steel, and aluminum imports.
- On April 3, Trump also announced new global tariffs, including:
- 26% on India
- 34% on China
- 24% on Japan
- 46% on Vietnam
- 10% on the UK
- 25% on all foreign-made automobiles
What’s Next?
- While the Senate’s resolution passed, it is unclear whether Trump will accept it or veto the decision.
- The reversal of Canada-specific tariffs could signal growing Republican division over Trump’s economic policies.
This move highlights rising concerns over trade tensions and the potential impact of higher consumer prices in the US. (ANI)
