In a strong New Year’s Eve message, Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday said that the “reunification of our motherland, a trend of the times, is unstoppable,” hours after the Chinese PLA Eastern Theater Command completed its “Justice Mission 2025” drills around Taiwan.
According to China’s Foreign Ministry, Xi highlighted that China had “solemnly commemorated the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, and established Taiwan Recovery Day.” He said these national events were “majestic and powerful,” adding that the glory of victory would shine through history and inspire the Chinese people to remember the past, honor fallen heroes, cherish peace, and create a better future.
Xi also referred to his recent attendance at the opening ceremony of the National Games, saying he was pleased to see Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao coming together in unity. He stressed the need to unswervingly implement the policy of “One Country, Two Systems” and to support Hong Kong and Macao in integrating into China’s overall development while maintaining long-term prosperity and stability.
“We Chinese on both sides of the Taiwan Strait share a bond of blood and kinship,” Xi said. “The reunification of our motherland, a trend of the times, is unstoppable.”
His remarks came as the Chinese PLA Eastern Theater Command concluded the “Justice Mission 2025” drills around Taiwan. The exercises saw the command deploy Army, Navy, Air Force, and Rocket Force units to conduct joint military drills in the Taiwan Strait and in areas north, southwest, southeast, and east of Taiwan.
Taiwan’s Minister of National Defense, Wellington Koo, said the PLA’s actions were provocative and threatened regional stability, according to Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense. (ANI)
