RIYADH, March 15 (ANI): The Saudi Ministry of Defense confirmed that four drones were intercepted and destroyed within the Riyadh metropolitan area on Sunday, bringing the total number of drones neutralized across the capital and eastern regions to 10 for the day.
The announcement followed an earlier update about an hour prior, when the ministry said two other drones had been downed in the eastern part of the country.
Before these incidents, Saudi forces had already neutralized seven drones across the same regions. Officials also confirmed the interception and destruction of another drone detected over the Al-Jawf region in the north.
The operations highlight the continued efforts of Saudi air defenses to protect the kingdom’s central and eastern territories.
Saudi Arabia has faced a sustained series of aerial threats since the start of joint US-Israeli military operations against Iran on February 28.
During this period, the kingdom has been repeatedly targeted by waves of drones and missiles. According to Al Jazeera, the attacks have resulted in at least two deaths and 12 injuries.
Shortly after the latest interceptions, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a statement distancing itself from the attacks.
As reported by Al Jazeera, the IRGC said, “This attack has no connection to the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the Saudi government should seek to discover the origin of the attacks.”
The volume of projectiles represents an unusually high level of aerial threats for Saudi Arabia, according to Euronews, particularly after nearly 50 drones were intercepted in a massive wave of attacks on Friday.
Critical sites, including the US Embassy and key oil infrastructure, remain under heightened risk as regional tensions continue to escalate.
Adding to the volatile situation, the Israeli military confirmed a new wave of strikes in Tehran.
“The IDF has just begun a wide-scale wave of strikes targeting infrastructure of the Iranian terror regime across Tehran,” the military said in a statement.
Israel has also expanded its operations into Lebanon, striking the Al-Zrariya Bridge to prevent Hezbollah from moving combat forces.
As the multi-front conflict intensifies, US President Donald Trump signaled Washington’s intention to increase pressure on Iran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran’s military capabilities were being decimated.
“We have unparalleled firepower, unlimited ammunition, and plenty of time — watch what happens to these deranged scumbags today,” he wrote.
Trump added, “They’ve been killing innocent people all over the world for 47 years, and now I, as the 47th President of the United States of America, am killing them. What a great honor it is to do so.”
Despite the escalation, concerns about regional stability remain.
A CNN report suggested that the Trump administration may have underestimated the likelihood of Iran closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Sources said the Pentagon and the National Security Council did not fully anticipate such a move, despite long-standing US contingency plans for the vital waterway. (ANI)
