New Delhi, November 3 (ANI) — The Supreme Court on Monday called for strict and decisive measures to curb the growing menace of cyber frauds, especially digital arrest scams, stating that the issue will be dealt with an “iron hand.”

A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi expressed shock after learning that nearly ₹3,000 crore had been extorted from victims through such scams. “If we don’t pass harsh and stringent orders, the problem will magnify,” Justice Kant remarked.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and CBI submitted a sealed report to the court. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed that a special unit within the MHA is addressing the issue and taking preventive steps. The case will be heard again on November 10.
Last week, the apex court had issued notices to all states and Union Territories, directing them to submit details of pending cyber arrest cases. It also sought to determine whether the CBI has sufficient resources to handle nationwide investigations.
The court took suo motu cognisance after a senior citizen couple from Ambala reported being defrauded of over ₹1 crore through a fake “digital arrest” order purportedly issued by the Supreme Court.
Calling the forgery of judicial documents a “direct assault on the dignity of the institution,” the court emphasized that such acts undermine public trust in the judicial system and cannot be treated as ordinary cybercrimes. It urged coordinated efforts between central and state police to uncover the full scope of the scam network.
