New Delhi [India], June 14 (ANI): Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday sharply criticized the Indian government for abstaining from a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution that called for the protection of civilians and respect for legal and humanitarian obligations in Gaza. She labeled the move “shameful” and “disappointing,” asserting that it betrays India’s moral and constitutional values.
In a strongly worded post on X, Gandhi condemned the abstention and said that true global leadership requires the courage to defend justice, especially in times of humanitarian crises.
“It is shameful and disappointing that our government has chosen to abstain on the UN motion for the protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations in Gaza,” she wrote.
Gandhi emphasized the humanitarian toll in Gaza, stating that over 60,000 people—mostly women and children—have been killed. She accused India of turning a blind eye as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues what she described as the “annihilation” of an entire nation.
“Not only are we standing silent as Mr. Netanyahu annihilates an entire nation, but we are also cheering on as his government attacks Iran and assassinates its leadership in flagrant violation of its sovereignty and complete contravention of all international norms,” she stated.
The Wayanad MP described India’s abstention as a tragic departure from its historic anti-colonial stance and questioned how the country could abandon the principles enshrined in its constitution and the values of its freedom struggle.
“How can we, as a nation, just abandon the principles of our constitution and the values of our freedom struggle that led the way for an international arena based on peace and humanity?” she asked.
She further added, “True global leadership demands the courage to defend justice; India has shown this courage unfailingly in the past. In a world that is increasingly divisive, we must reclaim our voice for humanity and stand fearlessly for truth and non-violence.”
Priyanka Gandhi has previously shown vocal support for the Palestinian cause. During the 2023 winter session of Parliament, she was seen carrying a bag emblazoned with the word “Palestine” and emblems such as the watermelon—a widely recognized symbol of Palestinian solidarity.
On Friday, the UNGA adopted a landmark resolution demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution received overwhelming support from 149 nations. However, 19 countries, including India, abstained, while 12 voted against it.
