Satna (Madhya Pradesh), May 3 (ANI): A 20-year-old man accused of shooting a police head constable at Jaitwara police station in Satna district was arrested early Saturday morning following an encounter with law enforcement officers, police said.
The accused, identified as Achchhu alias Adarsh Sharma, a resident of Mehuti village, was shot in the leg during the encounter and is currently receiving treatment at the district hospital.
The incident dates back to the intervening night of April 28 and 29, when Sharma allegedly opened fire on Head Constable Prince Garg while he was sleeping inside the barracks of Jaitwara police station. Garg was critically injured and later admitted to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Rewa, where his condition is now reported to be stable.
“On the intervening night of April 28-29, an unidentified person opened fire on our head constable, Prince Garg, while he was asleep in the police station barrack. After intense efforts, the assailant was identified as Achchhu alias Adarsh Sharma,” said Satna Superintendent of Police Ashutosh Gupta.
Authorities further revealed disturbing behavior by the accused prior to the shooting. According to police, Sharma had recently set fire to his own home and expelled his parents and grandparents.
Over a dozen police teams were deployed to track Sharma down. Based on a tip-off around 2:00–2:30 am on Saturday, police located him near a brick kiln on Tikuri Akona road. When officers attempted to apprehend him, Sharma opened fire.
“A bullet struck a police officer, but he was protected by a bulletproof jacket. In retaliation, police fired back, injuring the accused in the leg,” SP Gupta added.
Following his arrest, Sharma was taken to the district hospital. A gun and two cartridges were recovered from his possession. Police also confirmed that Sharma has three prior criminal cases registered against him in two different police stations in Satna district.
Further investigation and interrogation will take place after his medical treatment is complete.
