London [UK], July 14 (ANI): World No. 1 Jannik Sinner avenged his heartbreaking French Open final loss by outclassing Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz to claim his maiden Wimbledon title on Sunday.
The 23-year-old Italian secured his fourth career Grand Slam title — adding to his two Australian Open and one US Open crowns — by defeating Alcaraz 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in a high-quality contest brimming with class and intensity. It marked Sinner’s first-ever Wimbledon final and ended Alcaraz’s career-best 24-match winning streak. He also became the first Italian to capture what many consider the most prestigious Grand Slam title.
Sinner, who had previously maintained a perfect 5–0 record in major finals, finally suffered a blemish earlier this year in Paris but returned to winning ways on the grass of London.
Though Sinner was precise with his groundstrokes, he dropped the opening set as Alcaraz came out swinging with heavy pace, deft drop shots, and trademark resilience to rally from 2-4 down and claim the first set with a backhand block.
But the Italian dug deep, winning three tight sets in a row to hoist the trophy.
Sinner dropped just 17 games across his first three matches at Wimbledon this year and survived a scare in the fourth round, when Grigor Dimitrov was forced to retire despite leading. He also battled through an elbow issue, fought past Ben Shelton and Novak Djokovic, and booked his fifth Grand Slam final appearance.
After the match, Sinner acknowledged the difficulty of playing Alcaraz and praised their budding rivalry, saying, as quoted by the ATP website:
“I would like to start with Carlos. Again, an amazing tournament, but mostly thank you for the player you are. It is so difficult to play against you, but we have an amazing relationship off the court and on the court we just try to build each other up. Keep going, keep pushing, and you are going to hold this trophy many times. You already have two titles.”
Reflecting on his family’s presence at the historic moment, he added: “It is so special. Seeing my parents here, my brother, my whole team — it is amazing. Actually, a special thanks to my brother, because there is no Formula 1 race this weekend, that is why he is here.”
Alcaraz, gracious in defeat, also praised Sinner:
“It is a really well-deserved trophy after an unbelievable two weeks here in London for you, playing great tennis. For your team as well — you have an amazing team around you. I am really happy for you. It’s great to have a good relationship off the court but also a good rivalry on the court. It makes me improve every day, so thank you and congratulations.”
Alcaraz reflected on his own journey this season: “I am really proud of everything I’m doing. At the beginning of the season, I struggled a bit on the court and off the court, but then I started to really enjoy being on court again. The excitement I have every time I step on the court is thanks to my team, my family, and my friends. Without them, it wouldn’t be possible to stand here right now. It’s been a great journey so far and I just want to keep it going.” (ANI)
