Tel Aviv [Israel], June 28 (ANI): The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Saturday confirmed that sirens were activated in southern Israel following the launch of a projectile from Yemen. In a post on X, the IDF stated, “Sirens sounding in southern Israel following projectile fire from Yemen.”
According to The Times of Israel, the missile—launched by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen—was likely intercepted by Israeli air defenses. The IDF indicated that efforts to shoot down the ballistic missile appeared to have been successful. No injuries or property damage were reported following the attempted attack.
Prior to the sirens, residents in the area received an early warning via push notification on their mobile phones, alerting them to the incoming long-range missile.
The incident follows heightened tensions between Israel and the Houthis. Earlier this month, on June 15, the Israeli Air Force reportedly conducted a strike in Yemen, targeting Houthi military chief of staff Muhammad Al-Ghamari. The operation coincided with Israeli airstrikes in Iran.
IDF Spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin, during a press conference on June 15, stated, “Last night, while the strikes in Iran were ongoing, Air Force fighter jets flew over 2,000 kilometers from Israel and struck in Sanaa, Yemen. We will update later on the results of the strike.”
Reports from Ynet News, citing sources in Yemen, indicated that the Israeli strike targeted a Houthi command headquarters, where Al-Ghamari was believed to be meeting with other senior leaders. Following the attack, roadblocks were established in the area and ambulances were observed at the scene.
The Houthis began launching attacks on Israel and maritime traffic in the region in November 2023, shortly after the Hamas assault on Israel on October 7. These attacks ceased in January 2025, following a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
However, since March 18—when the IDF resumed its offensive in the Gaza Strip—the Houthis have reignited their missile campaign, launching approximately 50 ballistic missiles and over a dozen drones at Israel. A previous Houthi missile attack in July 2024 killed one civilian and injured several others in Tel Aviv, prompting Israel’s initial retaliatory strike in Yemen, The Times of Israel reported. (ANI)
