Colombo [Sri Lanka], April 5 (ANI): In a significant gesture symbolizing the deep-rooted ties between India and Sri Lanka, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake conferred the Mitra Vibhushana, Sri Lanka’s highest civilian honour for foreign dignitaries, upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking during a joint press statement, President Dissanayake said, “I am pleased to announce that the Government of Sri Lanka has decided to confer upon him (PM Narendra Modi) the highest Sri Lankan honour to a foreign head of state/head of government—Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana. This prestigious honour, introduced in 2008, is conferred upon heads of states and government for their friendship, and honourable Prime Minister Modi highly deserves this honour; that is what we firmly believe.”
Symbolism of the Award
The Mitra Vibhushana carries rich cultural symbolism:
- Dharma Chakra: Represents the shared Buddhist heritage shaping both nations’ traditions.
- Pun Kalasa (ceremonial pot with sheaves of rice): Symbolizes prosperity and renewal.
- Navarathna (nine precious gems): Signifies the priceless friendship between India and Sri Lanka, encased in a globe and lotus petals.
- Sun and Moon: Denote a timeless bond, extending from the past into the infinite future.
These elements together underscore the deep cultural and spiritual ties between the two countries.
