Bengaluru (Karnataka), June 4 (ANI) – What was meant to be a moment of celebration turned into tragedy on Wednesday, as a stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL 2025 victory celebrations claimed multiple lives and left several others injured. The massive turnout overwhelmed safety arrangements, sparking widespread mourning and political outrage.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating that the “pain of this tragedy has even erased the joy of victory.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he said, “It is with great shock that we heard the news that several people lost their lives and others were seriously injured in a stampede during the RCB team’s victory celebrations. May the souls of the deceased rest in peace and may those injured recover soon. My condolences to the bereaved families.”
The Chief Minister noted that concerns about crowd safety had led authorities to restrict a full-scale parade, yet the unfortunate incident still occurred due to the surging crowd near the stadium. “I appeal to the public to understand that life is more important than love and affection, and to give safety first priority,” he urged.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar echoed the grief and called for calm, announcing that he had spoken with the Police Commissioner and would personally visit hospitals to check on the injured. “The program was shortened and ended within 10 minutes due to the overwhelming crowd. Lakhs of people came. We appeal to everyone to remain calm,” he said.
Shivakumar also took to social media to express his condolences, writing, “The tragedy and death have brought deep pain and shock. My condolences to the deceased and their families. Let there be pride, but not bigger than life.”
Political Reactions and Blame Game
The incident triggered sharp criticism from opposition parties, who accused the Congress-led Karnataka government of negligence and poor crowd management.
BJP leader CT Ravi called the tragedy a “state-sponsored murder” and squarely blamed the government for what he termed a “complete failure” in planning. “The state government is responsible for this death,” he posted on X.
Janata Dal (Secular) leader Nikhil Kumaraswamy condemned the incident as “criminal negligence.” In a statement, he said, “What was meant to be a grand celebration of RCB’s long-awaited victory turned into chaos and loss of innocent lives. This is not just mismanagement; this is a complete collapse of basic administration. Six lives have tragically been lost in a stampede that could have been prevented.”
Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy echoed similar sentiments, calling the event a “massive tragedy” resulting from a “complete failure to take precautionary measures.” He added, “The Congress-led state government must take full responsibility and immediately support the families of the deceased while ensuring the best treatment for the injured.”
Condolences From National Leadership
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also expressed profound sorrow over the loss of lives and called for stronger safety protocols to prevent future tragedies. “I am deeply saddened by the tragic stampede in Bengaluru during the celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2025 victory,” he said in a statement. “The joy of victory should never come at the cost of lives.”
He emphasized the need for the state and relevant authorities to immediately review safety arrangements for large public events. “The Congress Party stands in solidarity with the people of Bengaluru and supports all efforts to provide relief and medical help,” Kharge added.
Details on Casualties and Ongoing Efforts
Karnataka Legislative Council member BK Hariprasad confirmed that at least 11 people, including women, lost their lives in the tragic stampede. He urged the government to ensure immediate medical care for the injured and to support the bereaved families.
Emergency services, local authorities, and hospital staff are working around the clock to treat the injured and assess the situation. As the city mourns the tragedy, questions remain about the planning and execution of such large-scale events.
RCB’s Historic Win Overshadowed
RCB’s long-awaited triumph—clinching the IPL 2025 trophy after 18 years with a six-wicket win over Punjab Kings in the finals at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium—was meant to be a landmark moment for Bengaluru’s cricket fans. Instead, it has been overshadowed by a tragedy that has left the city in mourning.
Authorities are expected to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident, while political leaders from across the spectrum continue to demand accountability and immediate corrective measures.
