New Delhi [India], July 28 (ANI): Elon Musk’s satellite internet venture Starlink will be limited to serving only two million customers across India, with speeds of up to 200 Mbps, Union Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar announced Monday.
Speaking on the sidelines of a Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) review meeting, the minister downplayed concerns that satellite communication services would pose a significant threat to existing telecom operators, especially the state-run BSNL. “Starlink can have only 20 lakh customers in India and offer up to 200 Mbps speed. That won’t affect telecom services,” Pemmasani said, aiming to allay fears of disruption in the Indian telecom sector.
Starlink is expected to primarily target rural and remote regions where traditional broadband infrastructure is lacking—areas where BSNL continues to maintain a strong presence. However, the minister noted that the high cost of satellite-based communication would naturally restrict mass adoption. “The upfront cost for satcom services will be too high, and the monthly cost may be around Rs 3,000,” he said, implying that premium pricing would limit Starlink to a niche market.
With such costs, Starlink is unlikely to directly compete with mainstream mobile and broadband operators, who offer services at significantly lower prices and serve millions of users.
Regarding BSNL’s strategy, Pemmasani stated that the state telecom provider has completed its nationwide 4G rollout. He added that the company would prioritize expanding its market footprint rather than increasing revenue through tariff hikes. “We want market first. There are no tariff hikes planned,” he said, suggesting BSNL intends to maintain competitive pricing, particularly in rural areas where Starlink may attempt to gain traction.
