Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], April 13 (ANI): West Bengal BJP president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar on Saturday launched a fierce attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leadership, accusing the Mamata Banerjee-led state government of appeasement politics and failing to maintain law and order in the state amid the recent violence linked to protests against the Waqf Amendment Act.
Reacting sharply to statements by TMC MP and party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, Majumdar accused the TMC of marginalizing Hindus under the guise of secularism.
“Hindus have been hearing this dialogue for the last 75 years since Independence… By feeding the tablets of secularism, the entire Hindu society has been marginalized. Hargovind Das and his son Chandan Das, both father and son, died. What is happening? Is there a government or not? This government has completely sold itself to Jihadis,” Majumdar said while speaking to ANI.
He strongly criticized the government’s response to the unrest in Murshidabad, where protests against the Waqf Act escalated into violent clashes resulting in the deaths of three individuals. Majumdar questioned the accountability of the state government and police forces and demanded immediate action.
He also called for the arrest of Siddiqullah Chowdhury, a TMC leader and state minister, for allegedly making provocative remarks against Hindus. “The kind of provoking words Siddiqullah Chowdhury has used against Hindus while being a minister, he should be arrested,” Majumdar said.
Attacking Abhishek Banerjee directly, Majumdar said, “Abhishek Banerjee, who neither knows about West Bengal nor about Murshidabad, is jumping and saying big things… He makes statements without knowing the reality on the ground.”
Earlier in the day, Abhishek Banerjee addressed the ongoing tensions, stating that there were deliberate efforts to incite communal unrest in Bengal. Urging the public to remain calm, he said, “Some people want to set Bengal on fire. We should maintain peace and not fall prey to rumours.”
He also warned of attempts to divide society on religious lines. “Many people are trying to create unrest in Bengal by sowing seeds of division in the name of religion. I appeal to everyone to maintain peace and preserve Bengal’s legacy of harmony. We should all be alert and aware,” Banerjee said.
The comments come amid increasing tensions in the state following the violence in Murshidabad’s Jangipur area, where clashes broke out between police and protesters over the Waqf Amendment Act. The demonstrations involved stone-pelting, arson, and vandalism, with police vehicles torched during the unrest.
In the aftermath of the violence, the Calcutta High Court directed enhanced security, and the Border Security Force (BSF) has deployed five companies in the area to assist local law enforcement, confirmed IG South Bengal Frontier Karni Singh Shekhawat on Saturday.
West Bengal Police confirmed that three individuals were killed on Friday night during the mob violence in Murshidabad. Investigations are ongoing, and security forces remain on high alert in the region.
