New Delhi [India], May 27 (ANI): Tahawwur Rana, a key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack conspiracy case, has filed a petition before the Patiala House Court seeking permission to communicate with his family. Currently in judicial custody, Rana has requested access to jail facilities for family interaction as per existing regulations.
Rana submitted a fresh application before the National Investigation Agency (NIA) court, scheduled for hearing tomorrow by Special NIA Judge Chander Jit Singh. Earlier, the court had rejected his plea to speak with his family over the phone during his time in NIA custody.
Rana’s lawyer, Piyush Sachdeva, argued that as a foreign national, Rana holds a fundamental right to contact his family, who remain deeply concerned about his well-being while in custody. However, the NIA opposed the request, citing the ongoing investigation and the risk of revealing sensitive information.
Recently, the NIA collected voice and handwriting samples from Rana, who was extradited from the United States. He provided handwriting specimens by writing alphabets and numerical characters, fully complying with the court’s directive, confirmed Advocate Sachdeva.
The Special NIA Court had earlier approved the collection of these samples from Rana, a 64-year-old Canadian businessman of Pakistani origin. Rana was extradited to India in connection with his alleged involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
Following his extradition, Rana was placed under NIA custody in New Delhi, where investigators are examining his suspected links to the masterminds behind the attacks.
The 26/11 Mumbai terror strikes, orchestrated by the Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, resulted in over 170 deaths and hundreds of injuries. Rana’s extradition and interrogation are part of India’s ongoing efforts to prosecute all conspirators involved in the attacks. (ANI)
