Birmingham [UK], July 6 (ANI): India etched its name in the history books with a commanding 336-run victory over England in the second Test at Edgbaston on Saturday, marking their largest overseas Test win by runs and leveling the series 1–1.
The triumph also saw Shubman Gill, at 25 years and 301 days, become the youngest Indian captain to win a Test match abroad, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar, who was 26 years and 202 days when he led India to victory against New Zealand in Auckland in 1976.
India’s previous biggest overseas win by runs was a 318-run victory over the West Indies in North Sound in 2016. At Edgbaston, Gill’s men set a daunting target of 608 runs for England and bowled them out for 271 to seal the win.
The historic result was the culmination of a team effort led by Gill, pacers Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj, and veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane. Gill, who was named Player of the Match, not only shone with the bat but also displayed astute captaincy to end India’s long wait for a win at Edgbaston.
Match Highlights
England opted to field first after winning the toss, but India piled on a mammoth 587 in their first innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) and Karun Nair (31) laid the foundation with an 80-run stand. Gill anchored the innings with a magnificent 269 off 387 balls, featuring 30 fours and three sixes. He shared two massive partnerships — a 203-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja (89) and a 144-run stand with Washington Sundar (42).
In reply, England stumbled to 84/5 before Harry Brook (158) and Jamie Smith (184*), who put together a record 303-run partnership, mounted a fightback. However, Siraj (6/70) and Akash Deep (4/88) ripped through the lower order, bowling England out for 407 and giving India a 180-run lead.
India’s second innings was marked by aggressive intent. KL Rahul scored a fluent 55, and Jaiswal added 28. Gill continued his dream match with a blistering 161 off 162 balls, including 13 fours and eight sixes. He added 175 runs with Jadeja, who finished unbeaten on 69, as India declared at 427/6, setting England an improbable 608 to win.
England faltered in their chase, reduced to 50/3 early. Jamie Smith (88) showed resistance, but Akash Deep (6/99) and Siraj dismantled the rest of the batting lineup, bowling England out for 271. Akash Deep finished with a match haul of 10 wickets, cementing his place as one of India’s standout performers.
Ajinkya Rahane also made a significant contribution with scores of 81 and 102 in the match.
The emphatic win not only kept India’s hopes alive in the series but also underscored Gill’s growing stature as a leader and a batsman, making the victory one to remember for generations. (ANI)
