New York [US], May 15 (ANI): A delegation from the Government of India recently met with United Nations Under-Secretary-General Vladimir Voronkov of the Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and Assistant Secretary-General Natalia Gherman of the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) to discuss combating the use of emerging technologies for terrorist purposes.
The meeting, held in New York, aligned with the 2022 Delhi Declaration, adopted by the Counter-Terrorism Committee under India’s chairmanship. Discussions focused on non-binding guiding principles to address threats posed by unmanned aircraft systems and the misuse of emerging financial technologies for terrorist activities, developed with CTED’s support.
During the meeting, Voronkov and Gherman expressed their condolences over the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, which claimed 26 lives. Following the attack, the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the elimination of over 100 terrorists linked to groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM).
The discussions emphasized ongoing collaboration within CTED and UNOCT’s mandates, particularly in implementing key Security Council counter-terrorism resolutions and the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. India’s support for UNOCT-led technical capacity-building initiatives—such as cybersecurity, countering terrorist travel, victim support, and combating terrorism financing—was also highlighted.
In response to the Pahalgam attack, Pakistan retaliated with cross-border shelling and drone attempts along the Line of Control (LoC) and border regions. India’s counter-response included coordinated attacks on radar infrastructure, communication centers, and airfields in Pakistan. On May 10, both nations reached an understanding to cease hostilities.
This dialogue reflects India’s commitment to enhancing global counter-terrorism efforts while leveraging its leadership in formulating international strategies against the misuse of advanced technologies for terrorism. (ANI)
