Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], May 17 (ANI): Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has affirmed his commitment to leading one of the seven delegations in India’s continued fight against cross-border terrorism, despite objections from the Congress party. Tharoor emphasized that while the party leadership is entitled to its opinions about his abilities, his dedication to fulfilling his responsibilities remains unwavering.
“My party leadership is entitled to its opinion of my abilities or lack thereof, and I think that is really for them to explain. I have absolutely no comment to make on that. I am honored to have been entrusted with the responsibility, and I will fulfill that responsibility just as I have fulfilled every responsibility entrusted to me,” Tharoor stated, referring to his longstanding career both at the United Nations and within the Congress Party.
He added that the issue of cross-border terrorism transcends party politics and is a matter of national unity. “As a citizen, being called upon to serve the nation at a time of crisis is a matter of duty for all of us. It is an honor that I’ve been asked to lead the delegation, and I look forward to playing my part. To my mind, this has nothing to do with party politics. It’s all to do with what our country has been through in recent times and the need for us to present a united front,” he said.
The controversy arose after Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the government for not including all the names suggested by the Congress party for the delegation. Ramesh called the move “dishonest,” expressing disappointment that the names suggested by the party were overlooked.
The delegation led by Tharoor will project India’s firm stance against terrorism to the world. Following the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, where 26 people were killed, India launched “Operation Sindoor” on May 7, targeting terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The operation resulted in the elimination of over 100 terrorists.
The government has formed All-Party Delegations to convey India’s zero-tolerance stance against terrorism on global platforms. These delegations include MPs from various parties, political figures, and diplomats. The inclusion of Tharoor, despite opposition from some within Congress, is seen as a move to reflect national consensus and solidarity in the fight against terrorism. (ANI)
