
New Delhi [India], April 27 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tribute to Dr. K Kasturirangan, the former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), following his passing at the age of 84. In his address during the 121st episode of Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Modi praised Dr. Kasturirangan’s pivotal role in transforming India’s space program and bringing global recognition to the country’s efforts in space exploration.
The Prime Minister highlighted that under Dr. Kasturirangan’s leadership, ISRO gained a new identity, with significant milestones achieved in India’s space endeavors. He noted that the space programs spearheaded by Dr. Kasturirangan earned worldwide recognition and that many of the satellites currently in use were launched during his tenure.
PM Modi emphasized Dr. Kasturirangan’s commitment to innovation and his continuous drive to learn and explore new frontiers, which he described as an inspiring quality for the younger generation. “His contribution to science, education, and taking India’s space program to new heights will always be remembered,” the Prime Minister stated.
Dr. Kasturirangan, who played a key role in shaping India’s National Education Policy (NEP), was also lauded for his forward-thinking approach to education. PM Modi recalled his selfless service to the nation and acknowledged the remarkable work done by Dr. Kasturirangan in both the scientific and educational fields.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi also condoled Dr. Kasturirangan’s death and underscored his instrumental role in advancing India’s space program. The former ISRO Chairman had been responsible for overseeing the development of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), which became India’s most reliable satellite launch system.
During his nearly decade-long tenure as ISRO Chairman (1994-2003), Dr. Kasturirangan’s leadership led to numerous significant advancements in space technology. He was also a prominent figure in Indian public life, having served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2003 to 2009 and as the Director of the National Institute of Advanced Studies in Bengaluru.
Dr. Kasturirangan was honored with several prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan. His legacy continues to influence India’s space and educational policies, including his key role in the drafting of the National Education Policy 2020. (ANI)
