Washington DC [US], September 18 (ANI): US President Donald Trump announced a new supplemental priority for federal education grants on Wednesday, aimed at promoting “patriotic education” across American schools. The initiative represents the fifth supplemental priority under Secretary of Education Linda McMahon and will guide how the Department of Education awards discretionary grants.
The Secretarial priority seeks to advance civic education that teaches American history, values, and geography in an unbiased manner, according to the Department. “In the American system, educated citizens who know their rights and embrace their responsibilities cooperate to build a more perfect Union,” Secretary McMahon said. She emphasized the need for an education system that informs students about America’s founding principles, political institutions, and rich history to inspire informed patriotism and a love of country.
The initiative coincides with preparations for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026 and aims to support curricula that highlight both the nation’s achievements and its ongoing struggles toward equality and justice. The Department noted that patriotic education will present American history accurately and inspiringly, emphasizing progress in civil rights and the extension of constitutional protections, while affirming the significance of the country’s core values.
The proposed priority has been published in the Federal Register and is open for public comment for 30 days. Once finalised, it will shape the Department’s future grantmaking in civic and history education. (ANI)
