Washington, April 8: US President Donald Trump has announced a two-week suspension of the American bombing campaign against Iran, declaring a “double-sided ceasefire” and describing Tehran’s 10-point proposal as a workable foundation for a long-term peace agreement.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said the decision followed consultations with Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir, who urged restraint. The ceasefire is conditional upon Iran ensuring the “complete, immediate, and safe opening” of the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump asserted that the United States had “met and exceeded” its military objectives and indicated that both sides were close to finalising a broader agreement aimed at ensuring long-term peace in the Middle East. He added that “almost all” major points of contention between Washington and Tehran had been resolved, with the two-week pause intended to allow negotiations to be concluded.
Iran responded positively to the overture. Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran would halt military operations for two weeks, provided it is not attacked. He confirmed that Iran would facilitate safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz during this period, coordinated with its armed forces and subject to technical considerations.
Araghchi also acknowledged the diplomatic role played by Pakistan’s leadership and noted that the ceasefire would create space for further negotiations, potentially culminating in a peace summit in Islamabad.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council described the development as a “historic victory,” claiming that the United States had accepted key elements of its 10-point plan. According to Iranian state media, these include recognition of Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, its enrichment rights, the removal of sanctions, cessation of hostilities, compensation for damages, and the withdrawal of US forces from the region.
The Council stated that Iran had continued the conflict—ongoing since March 28—until its strategic objectives were achieved, and asserted that the ceasefire reflects a shift in regional power dynamics.
Despite the diplomatic breakthrough, tensions remain high. Earlier, the Israel Defense Forces said it carried out strikes on Iranian military infrastructure, including a facility in Shiraz linked to underwater detection systems and additional targets in Karaj associated with missile and air defence production.
The ceasefire has nevertheless raised hopes of de-escalation in a conflict that had threatened wider regional instability, with both sides now stepping back to pursue a negotiated settlement.385 words, 2 minutes read time.
