Washington, D.C. [US], July 31 (ANI): In a significant geopolitical and economic development, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States has finalized a trade agreement with Pakistan to jointly develop what he described as the country’s “massive oil reserves.” He also hinted that the oil extracted from this initiative could potentially be sold to India in the future.
The announcement, made via a post on Trump’s Truth Social account, comes just hours after he imposed a 25 percent tariff and additional penalties on Indian imports, citing concerns over the U.S. trade deficit and India’s ongoing energy ties with Russia.
“We have just concluded a Deal with the Country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive Oil Reserves. We are in the process of choosing the Oil Company that will lead this Partnership. Who knows, maybe they’ll be selling Oil to India some day!” Trump posted.
This surprise development is poised to reshape regional dynamics, as it positions Pakistan, a long-time U.S. ally with strained ties with India, at the center of an energy collaboration with Washington. Trump’s mention of future oil exports to India, despite newly imposed tariffs, adds a provocative twist to his evolving foreign policy in South Asia.
The U.S.-Pakistan oil partnership could also serve as a strategic counterbalance to growing Chinese investments in Pakistan’s energy and infrastructure sectors, particularly under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative.
Trump further noted that the White House is actively engaged in negotiations with several countries on trade deals and tariffs. “We are very busy in the White House today working on Trade Deals. I have spoken to the Leaders of many Countries, all of whom want to make the United States ‘extremely happy,’” he said.
He revealed that South Korea, currently facing a 25 percent U.S. tariff, is in talks with his administration to negotiate a reduction. “South Korea is right now at a 25% Tariff, but they have an offer to buy down those Tariffs. I will be interested in hearing what that offer is,” he wrote.
In closing, Trump said that other nations are also making offers to reduce U.S. tariffs and that a comprehensive report on trade negotiations would be released “at the appropriate time.” His post concluded with the slogan, “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
The U.S.-Pakistan oil deal, paired with rising trade tensions with India, signals a potential shift in Washington’s South Asia strategy, with energy cooperation and economic leverage taking center stage.
