Washington, DC [US], June 17 (ANI): US President Donald Trump has cut short his visit to the G7 Summit in Canada and requested an emergency meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) upon his return to Washington, according to Fox News. The development comes amid growing tensions in the Middle East, particularly the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.
Fox News reporter Lawrence Jones III confirmed that Trump has instructed his NSC to be ready in the White House’s Situation Room. “I’ve been informed that the President will have dinner with the heads of state of the G7 nations [in Canada] and then immediately depart for Washington. He has requested that the National Security Council be prepared in the situation room,” Jones shared on X (formerly Twitter).
Meanwhile, Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social to refute claims by French President Emmanuel Macron that he left the summit to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. “Wrong! He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a Cease Fire,” Trump wrote. “Whether purposely or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong. Stay Tuned!”
In addition to President Trump, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was also attending the summit in Alberta, will be returning early. “I have to be back,” Trump said during a photo-op with fellow world leaders at the G7. “You probably see what I see. And I have to be back as soon as I can.”
The White House issued a statement underscoring the seriousness of the situation. “President Trump had a great day at the G7, even signing a major trade deal with the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Much was accomplished, but because of what’s going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State,” said Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also weighed in during an interview with Fox News, saying, “What you’re watching in real time is peace through strength and America First. We are postured defensively in the region to be strong in pursuit of a peace deal.” He added that President Trump has made it clear that a diplomatic solution remains on the table.
As of Tuesday, the Israel-Iran conflict had entered its fifth day. Israel recently targeted Iranian state media facilities in Tehran, escalating an already volatile situation. Trump echoed his hardline stance on Iran in a Truth Social post made shortly before leaving Canada: “Iran should have signed the ‘deal’ I told them to sign. What a shame, and waste of human life. Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON.”
In a joint statement released on Tuesday, the G7 nations, including the US, called for de-escalation in the Middle East while describing Iran as the “principal source of regional instability and terror.” Trump signed the joint declaration, reinforcing Washington’s alignment with Israel and its broader security objectives in the region.
