Washington [US], June 28 (ANI): US President Donald Trump on Friday celebrated what he called a landmark Supreme Court decision curbing the power of federal judges to issue nationwide injunctions—a ruling that he said reasserts the authority of the executive branch and allows his administration to move forward with key policy initiatives, CNN reported.
Speaking at a press conference at the White House, Trump said the decision marked a “historic victory” and would help end what he described as years of judicial interference. “Thanks to this decision, we can now promptly file to proceed with numerous policies that have been wrongly enjoined on a nationwide basis,” he said.
The ruling arose from a case involving challenges to the administration’s stance on birthright citizenship, but its broader implications touch on the balance of power between the judiciary and the executive. In its majority opinion, written by Justice Amy Coney Barrett, the Court concluded that lower courts had overstepped their constitutional authority by issuing sweeping nationwide injunctions.
“When a court concludes the executive branch has acted unlawfully, the answer is not for the court to exceed its power too,” Barrett wrote, emphasizing judicial restraint and the constitutional separation of powers.
Trump, who has often clashed with federal judges and railed against what he calls “unelected bureaucrats” thwarting his policy agenda, singled out Barrett for praise. “I want to thank Justice Barrett, who wrote the opinion brilliantly, as well as Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Alito, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Thomas. Great people,” Trump said.
Attorney General Pam Bondi, appearing alongside Trump, echoed his sentiments. “These injunctions have allowed district court judges to be emperors,” she said. “They vetoed all of President Trump’s power, and they cannot do that. This has been a bipartisan problem that has lasted five presidential terms. Five different presidents—and it has ended today.”
The ruling is expected to have far-reaching effects on a range of Trump administration policies that have been halted by lower courts. According to White House officials, those policies include defunding sanctuary cities, halting refugee resettlement programs, and suspending federally funded medical care for transgender individuals.
Friday’s decision also marks a turnaround in Trump’s relationship with Justice Barrett, whom he nominated but had publicly criticized in the past over perceived unpredictability in her rulings. The ruling, backed by the six conservative justices on the Court, is being touted by Trump allies as one of the most consequential legal victories of his presidency.
Trump’s approval of the Court’s decision comes at the end of a high-profile week that also saw US military action in Iran as part of a broader regional campaign, according to senior Israeli officials. Trump described the week as one of the most impactful of his second term so far.
As the President looks ahead to the July 4 deadline for passing a sweeping tax-and-spending package, internal Republican debates over proposed Medicaid cuts and rural hospital funding continue. Still, Trump remains bullish on the bill’s prospects. “It’s a great bill. It’s a popular bill,” he said. “But we’ll get no Democrats, only because they don’t want to vote for Trump.”
Despite potential political risks highlighted by GOP pollsters, Trump has signaled no intention of backing down, determined to secure what he views as a transformative legislative and judicial legacy. (ANI)
