Washington, DC [US], July 28 (ANI): U.S. President Donald Trump announced Monday that he has shortened the original 50-day deadline given to Russian President Vladimir Putin to just 10 to 12 days to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine, CNN reported.
Speaking alongside UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at his Turnberry golf resort in Scotland, Trump said, “I’m going to make a new deadline of about 10 or 12 days from today. There’s no reason in waiting. I want to be generous, but we just don’t see any progress being made.”
While expressing reluctance to impose additional penalties, Trump warned that punitive measures could be introduced if a deal is not reached. “It would be sanctions and maybe tariffs, secondary tariffs. I don’t want to do that to Russia,” he said.
“You would think, based on common sense, you would want to make a deal,” Trump said, referring to President Putin. “I guess we’ll find out.”
Earlier in the day, Trump explained his decision to reduce the original 50-day window. “We thought we had that settled numerous times, and then President Putin goes out and starts launching rockets into some city like Kyiv and kills a lot of people in a nursing home or whatever,” he said.
Trump greeted Starmer and his wife Victoria at the Scottish golf course before addressing the media. Highlighting the close relations between the United States and the United Kingdom, Trump stated that the two leaders would discuss trade and other key issues. “We want to make the Prime Minister happy,” Trump said.
Fresh off announcing the framework of a trade agreement with the European Union, Trump suggested that Starmer would be pleased with the developments. “The Prime Minister of the UK, while he’s not involved in this, will be very happy because you know, there’s a certain unity that’s been brought there, too,” Trump added.
