Washington, January 7 (ANI): US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced that Venezuela’s interim authorities will transfer between 30 and 50 million barrels of high-quality, sanctioned oil to the United States, marking a significant development following recent military and political actions in the South American nation.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the oil would be sold at market price, with the proceeds placed under his control to ensure the funds are used “to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States.”
“I am pleased to announce that the Interim Authorities in Venezuela will be turning over between 30 and 50 million barrels of high-quality, sanctioned oil to the United States of America,” Trump wrote. “This oil will be sold at its market price, and that money will be controlled by me, as President of the United States, to ensure it is used to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States.”
Trump said he had directed Energy Secretary Chris Wright to execute the plan immediately. According to the President, the oil will be transported by storage ships and delivered directly to unloading docks in the United States.
The announcement comes days after Washington carried out what Trump described as a “large-scale strike against Venezuela,” during which former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were captured and removed from the country.
Addressing a press conference in Florida hours after Maduro’s capture, Trump said US oil companies would invest billions of dollars to repair Venezuela’s long-neglected oil infrastructure and revive production.
“The oil business in Venezuela has been a total bust,” Trump said. “We’re going to fix it. US oil companies will spend billions of dollars to repair the badly broken infrastructure and start making money for Venezuela.”
Trump added that the United States would also sell Venezuelan oil to other countries, stating that poor infrastructure had previously prevented Venezuela from producing oil at scale.
“We’re in the oil business,” Trump said. “We’ll be selling large amounts of oil to other countries—many are already using it, and many more will come.”
Maduro and Flores were captured in Caracas during a joint operation involving US intelligence agencies and law enforcement, according to officials. Trump said both have been indicted in the Southern District of New York on charges related to alleged drug trafficking and narco-terrorism conspiracies, and will face trial in the United States.
