Washington, DC [US], January 7 (ANI): US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that interim authorities in Venezuela would transfer between 30 and 50 million barrels of sanctioned oil to the United States. He said the oil would be sold at market price, with the proceeds controlled by him to ensure the funds are used for the benefit of the people of Venezuela and the United States.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he has directed Energy Secretary Chris Wright to execute the plan immediately. According to the post, the oil will be transported by storage ships and delivered directly to unloading docks in the United States.
“I am pleased to announce that the Interim Authorities in Venezuela will be turning over between 30 and 50 million barrels of high-quality, sanctioned oil to the United States of America,” Trump wrote. “This oil will be sold at its market price, and that money will be controlled by me, as President of the United States of America, to ensure it is used to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States. I have asked Energy Secretary Chris Wright to execute this plan immediately.”
The announcement comes shortly after Washington carried out what Trump described as a “large-scale strike against Venezuela” on Saturday, following which deposed leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured and removed from the country.
Hours after Maduro’s capture, Trump said US oil companies would invest billions of dollars to repair Venezuela’s damaged oil infrastructure and help generate revenue for the South American nation.
Speaking at a press conference in Florida, Trump said the United States was now in the “oil-selling” business and would supply oil to other countries interested in purchasing it.
“We’re in the oil business. We’re going to sell it to them,” Trump said. “We’ll be selling oil probably in much larger quantities because they couldn’t produce very much due to how bad their infrastructure was.”
Trump added that Venezuela’s oil sector had been a “total bust” and that US oil companies would invest billions of dollars to repair what he described as a badly broken infrastructure, which he said had severely limited the country’s production capacity.
Maduro and Flores were captured in Caracas and flown out of the country in a joint operation involving intelligence agencies and US law enforcement. Trump stated that both have been indicted in the Southern District of New York on charges related to alleged drug trafficking and narco-terrorism conspiracies and will face trial.
