Washington/Miami [US], November 6 (ANI): US President Donald Trump has sharply criticized newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s victory speech, calling it “very angry” and labeling the 34-year-old Democrat a “communist,” while later offering a tentative note of cooperation.
Speaking to Fox News after Mamdani’s historic win, Trump said, “I thought it was a very angry speech, certainly angry toward me. He should be very nice to me as I’m the one who has to approve a lot of things coming to him — he’s off to a bad start.” The President added that while he wanted Mamdani “to do well” because he “loved New York,” he believed the new mayor represented a dangerous leftward shift.
Trump’s comments came in response to Mamdani’s fiery victory address at Brooklyn Paramount, where the mayor-elect told cheering supporters, “To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us. I have four words for him: Turn the volume up.”
Mamdani, a Democratic socialist and Assemblyman from Queens, made history as New York City’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor, securing more than a million votes in a record turnout. He defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent backed by Trump and Elon Musk, as well as Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.
During his Miami appearance at the America Business Forum, Trump suggested that Mamdani’s victory marked a “communist shift” in American politics. “We lost a little bit of our sovereignty last night in New York, but we’ll take care of it,” he said. “If you want to see what Congressional Democrats wish to do to America, just look at New York, where their party installed a communist as the mayor of the largest city in the nation.”
He warned that New York could resemble “communist Cuba or socialist Venezuela” under Mamdani’s leadership, predicting that residents would soon flee to Florida. “Miami will be the refuge for those escaping communism in New York City,” Trump said.
Still, Trump appeared to moderate his tone hours later. Speaking again in Miami, he hinted at limited cooperation with the incoming administration. “We’ll help him — a little bit, maybe. We want New York to be successful,” he remarked, calling the election “a battle between communism and common sense.”
Trump, who has repeatedly derided Mamdani as a “communist,” acknowledged that he wanted New York to “do well,” despite his skepticism. “The communists, Marxists, socialists, and globalists had their chance, and they delivered nothing but disaster. Now let’s see how a communist does in New York,” he said, drawing applause.
Mamdani, invoking India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru during his victory speech, called his election “a tryst with destiny” for New York. “A moment comes but rarely in history when we step out from the old to the new,” he quoted Nehru, vowing that his administration would bring “clarity, courage, and vision, not excuses.”
The new mayor also struck back at Trump’s rhetoric, declaring that New York “will be led by immigrants” and would “hold corrupt landlords and billionaires like Trump to account.”
Adding a theatrical twist, Trump concluded his Miami speech by mocking Mamdani’s win and performing his signature “YMCA” dance, joking, “Mandami, or whatever the hell his name is, thinks it’s wonderful to have men playing in women’s sports.”
Despite the political sparring, Trump’s final remarks reflected a reluctant recognition of Mamdani’s historic win: “We’ll help them. We want New York to succeed. We’ll see how that works out.” (ANI)
