Washington DC [US], July 9 (ANI): US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said his administration will announce new trade tariffs on at least seven more countries on Wednesday morning (local time), followed by additional names in the afternoon, as part of his sweeping trade agenda aimed at enforcing reciprocal terms.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote, “We will be releasing a minimum of 7 Countries having to do with trade tomorrow morning, with an additional number of Countries being released in the afternoon. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The announcement comes just a day after the White House published letters sent to 14 countries, notifying them of reciprocal tariffs that will take effect August 1. Trump reiterated Monday that “all money will be due and payable starting AUGUST 1, 2025 — No extensions will be granted.”
Among the 14 nations already informed of tariffs are major US trade partners in Asia, Africa, and Europe. Japan and South Korea will each face 25 percent tariffs on exports to the United States, while Thailand and Cambodia are slated for a 36 percent tariff each. Bangladesh and Serbia were notified of 35 percent tariffs, with Malaysia and Kazakhstan at 25 percent.
Myanmar and Laos will see the steepest penalties yet, with a 40 percent tariff each, while Indonesia faces 32 percent. Imports from South Africa and Bosnia and Herzegovina will be subject to 30 percent duties, and Tunisia was notified of a 25 percent tariff.
The new measures are part of Trump’s ongoing effort to pressure trading partners into what he calls “fair and reciprocal” trade relationships.
When pressed on whether his August 1 deadline is non-negotiable, Trump signaled some flexibility. “I would say firm but not 100 percent firm. If they call up and they say we would like to do something differently, we will be open to that,” he said.
Trump’s tariff campaign has drawn sharp criticism from some US allies and economists, who warn it risks sparking trade disputes and raising costs for American consumers. But the administration has maintained that tough tactics are necessary to rebalance trade and protect US industries.
The names of the next group of targeted countries will be revealed on Wednesday, with further announcements expected later the same day. (ANI)
