New Delhi [India], June 29 (ANI): Delhi Police’s Special Staff (South East District) arrested two armed robbers in the early hours of Sunday following a brief exchange of fire. The suspects were wanted for stabbing and robbing a US national on the night of June 25–26 in Amar Colony, South Delhi, officials said.
The accused, identified as Jatin alias Mogli and Akshay, were apprehended near DDA Astha Kunj Park, close to Nehru Place. According to police, on June 26, Fortis Escorts Hospital informed the Amar Colony Police Station about the admission of Aradome Bela Kahn (28), a US citizen who had sustained stab wounds during a mugging incident. The victim, who arrived in India on June 20 and was staying at Hotel Elegant in East of Kailash, was attacked while walking with a friend through Astha Kunj Park. He suffered serious injuries to his hand and was later shifted to Apollo Hospital for surgery.
The complainant—Kahn’s friend—told police that the assailants also stole her mobile phone during the incident. Investigators registered a case and began analysing CCTV footage while increasing surveillance in the area.
Based on a tip-off about the suspects’ presence in the vicinity of Astha Kunj Park around 5:10 AM on June 29, a team led by Inspector Rajender Singh Dagar attempted to apprehend them. However, the suspects opened fire on the officers. One bullet struck Inspector Dagar’s bulletproof jacket, while another hit Head Constable Mahendar’s protective gear, police said.
In response, police fired three rounds, injuring both suspects in their right legs. They were subdued and rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment. A sophisticated pistol, a country-made gun, and three live cartridges were recovered at the scene.
During interrogation, the accused admitted to their involvement in the attack. Both had dropped out of school in Class 5 and resorted to crime due to drug addiction and financial hardship. They revealed they often targeted isolated parks and poorly lit roads to ambush pedestrians. On June 25–26, they attacked the US national and his companion and stole the woman’s mobile phone.
Jatin, officials confirmed, has prior criminal records, including cases of robbery and assault. Further investigation is underway. (ANI)
