Washington, DC [US], June 4 (ANI): Two Chinese nationals have been charged by the U.S. Department of Justice for allegedly smuggling a highly dangerous biological pathogen into the United States for research at the University of Michigan Laboratory, in what federal authorities are calling a serious threat to national security.
According to an official release from the Justice Department, 33-year-old Yunqing Jian and 34-year-old Zunyong Liu face charges of conspiracy, smuggling goods into the U.S., making false statements, and visa fraud. The FBI arrested Jian over her alleged role in bringing a fungus called Fusarium graminearum—a pathogen considered a potential agroterrorism agent—into the country.
The fungus, responsible for causing “head blight” in wheat, barley, maize, and rice, leads to billions in global agricultural losses. It also produces toxins that can cause vomiting, liver damage, and reproductive defects in humans and livestock, posing a dual risk to food security and public health.
The complaint notes that Jian received funding from the Chinese government for related research in China and has reportedly expressed loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Liu, her boyfriend, works at a Chinese university conducting research on the same pathogen. The investigation revealed that both had lied about smuggling the fungus into the U.S. via Detroit Metropolitan Airport, later admitting they brought it in for research purposes at the University of Michigan, where Jian was employed.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. said, “The alleged actions of these Chinese nationals—including a loyal member of the Chinese Communist Party—are of the gravest national security concerns.” He added, “These two aliens have been charged with smuggling a fungus that has been described as a potential agroterrorism weapon into the heartland of America.”
FBI Detroit Special Agent Cheyvoryea Gibson emphasized the seriousness of the threat, stating, “These individuals exploited their access to laboratory facilities at a local university to smuggle biological pathogens, an act that posed an imminent threat to public safety.”
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed Jian’s arrest and warned of the broader implications, writing on X, “This case is a sobering reminder that the CCP is working around the clock to deploy operatives and researchers to infiltrate American institutions and target our food supply… putting American lives and our economy at serious risk.”
Jian is set to appear in federal court in Detroit for her initial hearing. The FBI, in collaboration with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, continues to investigate the incident as part of broader national security efforts. (ANI)
