
Tianjin [China], August 31 (ANI): UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a meeting ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, set to take place in Tianjin.
The two leaders underlined the importance of multilateralism and cooperation as solutions to today’s global challenges, Xinhua reported on Saturday. According to the report, Xi told Guterres that China is willing to deepen cooperation with the UN, support the organization in international affairs, and jointly promote development and prosperity.
Xi noted that 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the UN’s founding. He said history has shown that multilateralism, solidarity, and cooperation are the right responses to global challenges. He further called for restoring the United Nations’ authority and vitality so it can serve as the primary platform for all countries to coordinate actions and address challenges together.
Senior Chinese officials, including Cai Qi, Wang Yi, and Chen Min’er, attended the meeting.
The SCO Summit will officially begin this evening at the Meijiang Convention and Exhibition Centre in Tianjin. Following a welcoming ceremony and photo session, leaders will attend a reception and concert.
On Saturday, Xi met with Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Xinhua reported. A bilateral meeting between India and China also took place on Sunday. During his talks with Xi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized his commitment to advancing India-China ties based on mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity.
Xi, for his part, stressed the importance of India-China friendship, describing it as the “right choice” for both nations. He highlighted their shared historical and cultural ties and said that cooperation between the “dragon and the elephant” enables mutual success.
The SCO comprises 10 members: India, Belarus, China, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. It also has several dialogue partners and observers. (ANI)
