New York [US], July 12 (ANI/WAM): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the resumption of Houthi attacks on civilian vessels transiting the Red Sea, particularly those that took place between July 6 and 8.
“The sinking of both the MV Magic Seas and the MV Eternity C, along with the deaths of at least four crew members and injuries to others, is a dangerous re-escalation in this critical waterway,” Guterres said in a statement attributing the incidents to Houthi attacks.
With at least 15 crew members still reported missing, Guterres called on the Houthis to refrain from any actions that impede ongoing search and rescue operations.
Beyond being an unacceptable threat to the safety and security of seafarers, the attacks violate the freedom of navigation, create hazards to maritime transport, and pose serious risks of significant environmental, economic, and humanitarian damage to an already vulnerable coastal ecosystem, the statement noted.
The Secretary-General stressed that international law must be respected by all parties at all times. He also underscored that UN Security Council resolution 2768 (2025), which addresses Houthi attacks on merchant and commercial vessels, must be fully upheld.
The United Nations remains committed to advancing broader de-escalation in the region and continuing engagement with Yemeni, regional, and international actors to secure a sustainable and peaceful resolution to the conflict in Yemen.
