New Delhi [India], June 14 (ANI): Union Minister for Power Manohar Lal on Saturday visited the Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana (GHAVP) to assess the progress of the nuclear power project being executed by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) under the Department of Atomic Energy.
The ambitious project involves the construction of four 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), and once completed, it is expected to significantly enhance Haryana’s power capacity. According to an official release, 50 percent of the electricity generated will be allocated to the state. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini also joined the Minister during the site review.
As per the outlined timeline, the “First Pour of Concrete” for Unit-1 is scheduled for October 2025. The unit is expected to achieve its “First Criticality” by June 2030, with commercial operations slated to begin by March 2031. Unit-2 will follow six months after Unit-1 across all milestone phases.
During the visit, Minister Manohar Lal was also briefed on NPCIL’s extensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. To date, the corporation has invested ₹75 crore in community development, including infrastructure projects like roads and schools, deployment of medical vans, and the establishment of an Astro Turf Hockey Ground. Additional efforts include skill development programs and public awareness campaigns conducted in schools, NCC camps, and civil service training modules.
A notable highlight of the outreach efforts is the “Atom on Wheels” mobile exhibition van, which has been instrumental in educating the public about nuclear energy and its safety protocols.
Commending NPCIL’s initiatives, the Union Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding nuclear energy as a cornerstone of India’s clean, safe, and reliable energy future.
