
New Delhi [India], June 4 (ANI): India and Australia reaffirmed their growing defence partnership and shared commitment to combating terrorism during a high-level bilateral meeting between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles in New Delhi on Wednesday.
During the talks, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed gratitude to Australia for its solidarity following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. He underscored the deepening strategic cooperation between the two nations and the progress achieved in defence ties in recent years.
“It was heartening to note the significant milestones achieved in our bilateral defence relations since our last meeting. I hope that in the coming years, we will work with renewed momentum to further strengthen our cooperation,” Singh said. “This meeting is taking place at a time when India is facing extreme challenges along our western border. We have responded firmly to the barbaric incident in Kashmir, and I thank Australia for its support.”
Rajnath Singh noted that bilateral defence cooperation had become a cornerstone of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, crediting Australia’s leadership and commitment to enhancing security ties between the two nations.
In response, Richard Marles reaffirmed Australia’s support for India and expressed solidarity over the recent terror attack. He offered condolences on behalf of the Australian government and emphasized his country’s unwavering support in fighting terrorism.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who were killed in the appalling terrorist attack in Pahalgam,” Marles said. “Australia stands with India and all nations committed to eradicating terrorism. We also acknowledge India’s responsible leadership, particularly the measured response and cessation of military activity, which we view as a demonstration of maturity and restraint.”
The meeting was held against the backdrop of regional tensions and evolving security dynamics. Both leaders reiterated the importance of further strengthening collaboration in the strategic and defence sectors.
The Ministry of Defence stated, “Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh met Australian Deputy Prime Minister & Defence Minister Richard Marles MP in New Delhi to discuss regional and global security issues and deepen defence cooperation. Defence and security are key pillars of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with both nations committed to peace, stability, and a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific.”
Richard Marles’ visit to India is part of a broader regional tour, which also includes stops in the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia from June 2–5 for a series of high-level meetings aimed at enhancing regional cooperation and security. (ANI)
