Dhaka [Bangladesh], July 27 (ANI): An unidentified group operating under the banner of the “International Institute on Fascism and Genocide” is reportedly attempting to seize the headquarters of the Bangladesh Awami League, located in central Dhaka.
According to local sources, cleaning operations are underway in every room of the 10-story building, but it remains unclear under whose authority the work is being carried out. Supervisors involved in the activity claim the work will be completed before August 5, the anniversary of the student-led uprising that led to the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Shkhawat Hossain, overseeing the cleaning operation, told reporters, “This is an establishment from the era of the fascist Sheikh Hasina. We don’t want more fascists to be born here. That’s why we are taking it under control. No one’s permission is needed for this work.”
A large banner bearing the name “International Institute on Fascism and Genocide” has been hung on the building, located at 23 Bangabandhu Avenue. Around 10–12 workers are reportedly involved in daily cleaning activities. Some sources suggest the building may soon be used as a rest house for leaders of the movement opposing Sheikh Hasina.
The Awami League, founded in 1949, is Bangladesh’s oldest political party and played a crucial role in the nation’s independence. However, following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina in a student-led uprising last August, the interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus banned the party’s activities.
In the aftermath of Hasina’s fall, demonstrators torched multiple Awami League offices, including its central headquarters. Protesters have also been systematically removing monuments of Sheikh Hasina and her father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Notably, the historic 32 Dhanmondi residence of Sheikh Mujib, which functioned as the Bangabandhu Museum, was recently demolished by protestors.
The future of the Awami League’s headquarters remains uncertain as the interim administration continues its efforts to transition the country away from its previous leadership. (ANI)
