The meetings come amid ongoing tariff tensions following U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose additional tariffs on India over New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil.
In a post on X on Sunday (local time), Ambassador Kwatra said, “Had a detailed conversation with @RepJoeCourtney, Ranking Member of Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces. The talks took place against the backdrop of rising concerns over Washington’s additional tariffs on India for its Russian oil purchases. Kwatra briefed her on India’s hydrocarbon imports from the U.S., stressing their role in India’s energy security.
In a post on X, he said, “Had a useful conversation with Haley Stevens, Ranking Member Research and Technology Subcommittee. Apprised her of India’s significant hydrocarbon purchases from the U.S. as an important component of India’s energy security. Thanked her for her steadfast support of the relationship.”

Meanwhile, on Thursday (local time), White House Trade Adviser Peter Navarro launched one of the sharpest criticisms yet of India’s Russian oil purchases. He alleged India was “perpetuating” the Ukraine war by buying discounted crude from Moscow. Navarro claimed New Delhi was acting as a “laundromat for the Kremlin,” enabling Russia to finance its war while profiting from resale. (ANI)
