Washington DC [US], May 14 (ANI): Indian-origin US Congressman Shri Thanedar has introduced articles of impeachment against former President Donald Trump, urging lawmakers from both parties to take a stand and protect the Constitution. Sharing his thoughts on social media platform X, Thanedar stated, “It’s time for us to take action. I call on my colleagues from both sides of the aisle to support my Articles of Impeachment, stand up for this country, defend their oath, and protect the American people.”
In April, Thanedar formally introduced the impeachment articles, accusing Trump of a sweeping abuse of power and violations of the US Constitution. The charges center around Trump’s defiance of a unanimous 9-0 Supreme Court ruling, which required allowing El Salvador’s national, Kilmer Garcia, to return to the US and receive due process after a wrongful deportation.
Thanedar argued that Trump blatantly disregarded the ruling and failed to uphold the checks and balances essential to democracy. “This isn’t an isolated incident. It’s part of a dangerous, deliberate pattern,” Thanedar remarked.
The impeachment resolution outlines seven articles:
- Obstruction of Justice and Abuse of Executive Power: Trump allegedly defied court orders and denied due process, particularly concerning unlawful deportations.
- Usurpation of Congress’s Power of the Purse: Accusations of dismantling agencies and freezing funds without congressional approval.
- Abuse of Trade Powers and International Aggression: Claims that Trump imposed damaging tariffs and threatened military invasions of US allies.
- Violation of First Amendment Rights: Allegations of retaliating against journalists and critics and establishing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under Tesla CEO Elon Musk, violating constitutional limits.
- Creation of an Unlawful Office: Establishing DOGE and giving Elon Musk unconstitutional control over government functions and personal data.
- Bribery and Corruption: Accusations of dismissing criminal cases, accepting foreign payments, and coercing legal settlements for personal gain.
- Tyrannical Overreach: Attempts to consolidate power, undermining the constitutional presidency and eroding checks and balances.
Thanedar stressed that these actions reflect not just misconduct but “impeachable misconduct.” He criticized Trump’s leadership style as tyrannical, emphasizing that the presidency should not become an unchecked monarchy.
The articles of impeachment call for Congress to take immediate action to preserve constitutional integrity, asserting that upholding democratic values transcends political affiliations. (ANI)
