New York [US], July 29 (ANI): A gunman is dead following a shooting incident that injured a New York Police Department (NYPD) officer and two civilians near a corporate office building in Midtown Manhattan on Monday, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, as reported by CNN.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Commissioner Tisch stated, “At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized.”
According to CNN, citing a law enforcement source, the shooter was seen carrying a long rifle as he entered the 634-foot skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue, which houses offices for the National Football League (NFL) and investment firm Blackstone. The incident prompted a rapid response from authorities.
One civilian is reportedly in critical condition, while another civilian and the police officer—who was shot in the back—are expected to recover, CNN reported. The NYPD bomb squad was also deployed to the scene as a precaution.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed the agency’s involvement in assisting the NYPD at the scene. “The FBI is on scene at the Manhattan crime scene. The NYPD currently has the lead in this investigation. Our personnel are there to support their efforts. Motive is currently under investigation,” Bongino stated on X.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams, also present at the scene, urged nearby residents to stay indoors and remain cautious.
“I have been on scene at the shooting in Midtown, and we can report the shooter is neutralized. The NYPD are now searching 345 Park Avenue carefully. If you are in the building, please stay where you are. People have been shot and injured, and I will soon be going to the hospital,” Adams said in a statement posted on X.
An investigation into the motive behind the shooting is ongoing.
