Washington, DC [US], June 6 (ANI): Former US President Donald Trump has said he held a “very good conversation” with Chinese President Xi Jinping and clarified that while a trade deal exists between the two countries, certain points are being fine-tuned. Speaking to reporters at the White House on Thursday (local time), Trump said complexities had been resolved during the call, and both leaders had extended mutual invitations for official visits.
“We had a very good talk and we’ve straightened out any complexity. It’s very complex stuff and we straightened it out,” Trump stated. “The agreement was—we’re going to have Scott, Howard, and Jamieson go and meet with their top people to continue it forward. I think we’re in very good shape with China and the trade deal. We have a deal, as you know, but we were just straightening out some points—mostly to do with rare earths, magnets, and other things.”
Asked whether reduced trade tariffs were still in effect, Trump responded, “We have the deal. I mean, we’ve had a deal. We announced the deal. I wouldn’t even say finalizing it up—I’d say we have a deal, and now we’re making sure everyone understands what that deal is.”
Trump also revealed that Xi had invited him and the First Lady to China, and he had reciprocated with an invitation for the Chinese President and First Lady to visit the US. “We both accepted,” Trump said, adding that the scheduling would be announced soon.
On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump gave further details, noting that the phone call lasted approximately 90 minutes and yielded “a very positive conclusion for both countries.” He emphasized that the discussion was focused entirely on trade, with no conversation about Russia, Ukraine, or Iran.
Trump confirmed that the US would be represented in upcoming meetings by Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer. He stressed that there should no longer be any uncertainty regarding the complexity of rare earth products.
“The conversation was focused almost entirely on trade. Nothing was discussed concerning Russia/Ukraine or Iran,” Trump stated in his post. “Our respective teams will be meeting shortly at a location to be determined. We will inform the media as to scheduling and location of the soon-to-be meeting.”
The call came just days after Trump accused China of violating a trade agreement negotiated in Geneva last month to roll back tariffs for a 90-day period—an accusation Beijing rejected, accusing the US of reigniting economic tensions.
On May 30, Trump claimed China had breached the agreement without specifying the alleged violations. In another Truth Social post, Trump wrote, “Two weeks ago, China was in grave economic danger! The very high tariffs I set made it virtually impossible for China to trade into the United States marketplace… Many factories closed and there was, to put it mildly, ‘civil unrest.’”
He added, “I made a FAST DEAL with China in order to save them… Everything quickly stabilized and China got back to business as usual. Everybody was happy! The bad news is that China… has totally violated its agreement with us. So much for being Mr. NICE GUY.”
Earlier in May, a trade deal had been announced in Geneva. US Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent described the talks as productive and noted “substantial progress” had been made. He credited the Swiss government for providing a conducive venue and confirmed that both he and Ambassador Greer had briefed President Trump on the outcome.
As part of the agreement, both nations had agreed to suspend reciprocal tariffs for an initial 90-day period, with China imposing 10 percent tariffs on US goods and the US applying 30 percent tariffs on Chinese imports. A joint statement emphasized the importance of a sustainable, long-term, and mutually beneficial economic and trade relationship between the two largest economies. (ANI)
