New Delhi, India, January 20 (ANI): US Senator Steve Daines, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, concluded what was described as a productive visit to India from January 17 to 19, during which he held meetings in New Delhi with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, members of Parliament, and US and Indian business leaders, according to a statement from the US Embassy in New Delhi.
Reflecting on the visit, Daines said he traveled to India to reaffirm the shared values and strategic partnership between the two countries and to advocate on behalf of Montana’s pulse crop farmers. He said he appreciated Minister Goyal for listening to farmers’ concerns and added that he would continue to work with President Donald Trump to press the issue.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said that as the two nations seek to elevate their partnership, senior US government officials would continue to travel regularly to India. He noted that Senator Daines’ meetings with government officials and private sector stakeholders in New Delhi were instrumental in advancing the bilateral relationship, citing Daines’ experience in Asia and his role on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
During discussions with senior Indian officials and parliamentarians, Daines addressed expanding US-India defense cooperation, joint efforts to secure supply chains, and the importance of the strategic partnership in ensuring shared security and maintaining a stable and open Indo-Pacific region.
While in India, Daines also promoted the interests of the Trump administration and the people of Montana, including urging favorable provisions for pulse crops in any future trade agreement between the United States and India. Montana is the leading pulse crop producer in the United States, while India is the world’s largest consumer.
Daines sought to accelerate ongoing talks aimed at concluding a fair and reciprocal bilateral trade deal. He also met with members of the business community to highlight opportunities to deepen cooperation in advanced technologies and expand trade and investment ties to boost prosperity in both countries, the statement said.
