Rome [Italy], April 20 (ANI): US Vice President JD Vance met with senior Vatican officials on Saturday to discuss global humanitarian concerns, particularly surrounding migrants, refugees, and prisoners. The meeting, held during Vance’s Easter weekend visit to Rome with his family, also marked the first formal talks between the Trump administration’s second term and the Holy See.
Vance, a practicing Catholic, attended Good Friday services at St. Peter’s Basilica and later held discussions with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, and Archbishop Paul Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States.
According to a Vatican communiqué, both sides exchanged views on global crises, highlighting the plight of vulnerable populations in war-torn and politically unstable regions. The statement underscored a mutual hope for ongoing collaboration between the US government and the Catholic Church, acknowledging the Church’s contributions to serving the marginalized.
Despite previous friction over US immigration policy, the Vatican expressed optimism for “serene collaboration” moving forward. The communiqué also reaffirmed shared values, such as the protection of religious freedom and freedom of conscience.
Vance shared his reflections on social media, posting on X:
“I’m grateful every day for this job, but particularly today, where my official duties have brought me to Rome on Good Friday. I had a great meeting with Prime Minister Meloni and her team, and will head to church soon with my family in this beautiful city. I wish all Christians all over the world, but particularly those back home in the US, a blessed Good Friday.”
The meeting reflects the broader effort by the Trump administration to engage in dialogue with international religious and humanitarian institutions.
