Islamabad [Pakistan], April 11 (ANI): US Vice President JD Vance is engaged in a high-level meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, according to a statement from the White House.
The dialogue between the two leaders was confirmed by Al Jazeera, which reported that the discussions are part of broader diplomatic engagement underway in the Pakistani capital.
The meeting coincides with Islamabad hosting high-stakes peace talks between the United States and Iran on Saturday. The Iranian and American delegations have both arrived in the city to participate in the discussions, marking a significant moment in regional diplomacy centered at the Serena Hotel.
Visuals from outside the hotel showed tight security and heightened activity as international delegations convened at the venue where the talks are being held.
The American delegation includes JD Vance, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner. The Pakistani side includes Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. While the White House is expected to provide a full list of participants, no additional details have been released so far.
The arrival of these high-level officials follows what Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has described as “make or break” negotiations. Held under intense security, the summit aims to stabilize a fragile ceasefire and address the future of regional security.
On Saturday morning, the Iranian delegation departed its residence for the Prime Minister’s Office to begin formal discussions, following a week of global anticipation after the ceasefire announcement on April 8.
Confirming the movement, the Consulate General of Iran in Mumbai said in a post on X that the delegation was en route to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The broader stakes of the talks were underscored by Iranian Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref, who suggested that the outcome depends on the American approach. In a post on X, he stated that an agreement beneficial to both sides is possible if the US engages constructively, but warned that failure to do so could lead to continued conflict and increased global consequences.
Earlier in the day, a US aircraft carrying the negotiation team landed in Islamabad, highlighting the urgency of the talks. The US delegation includes Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Donald Trump.
The Iranian team, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, arrived after midnight under heightened security. According to reports, the aircraft was escorted into Pakistani airspace by AWACS aircraft, electronic warfare systems, and fighter jets.
According to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the window for these discussions is limited to 15 days. With the international community closely monitoring developments, the coming days in Islamabad are expected to determine whether the ceasefire leads to a sustained diplomatic resolution or renewed tensions.
