Moscow [Russia], May 8 (ANI): Chinese President Xi Jinping, currently on a state visit to Russia, held bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. The leaders underscored the ongoing deepening of relations between Beijing and Moscow under their current leadership, according to state media from both countries.
During the meeting, the two leaders signed a joint statement on advancing the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era. In a joint press briefing, Xi and Putin emphasized strengthening China-Russia ties amid shifting global dynamics.
Xi, as quoted by Russian state media TASS, stated, “Under my and your leadership, our political ties are getting stronger and practical cooperation is becoming closer, while cultural, humanitarian, and regional ties and exchanges are gaining momentum.” He added that China is prepared to assume a special responsibility alongside Russia as major global powers and permanent members of the UN Security Council, “dutifully and bravely protecting the truth about the history of World War II.”
According to Chinese news agency Xinhua, Xi said, “China and Russia have continuously deepened political mutual trust and strategic coordination, maintained close coordination and cooperation in international affairs, and injected valuable stability and positive energy into the changing and turbulent world.”
Xi’s visit to Russia, from May 7-10, coincides with celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in the Great Patriotic War. Xi remarked that the meeting aligns with the call to uphold international justice and promote reform in the global governance system. He expressed China’s readiness to work with Russia to safeguard the global multilateral trading system and maintain stable and unobstructed industrial and supply chains.
This marks the third interaction between the leaders this year, following virtual talks in January and a phone conversation in February. Ahead of the meeting, the Kremlin had announced that Putin and Xi would discuss the full scope of their comprehensive partnership, including strategic consultations on key international and regional issues. Russian Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov noted that discussions would focus on the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline project, as well as matters concerning Ukraine and Russia-US relations.
Upon Xi’s arrival in Moscow, his plane was escorted by Russian Air Force aircraft after entering Russian airspace. At Vnukovo Airport, Xi was welcomed by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova and other senior officials.
