Moscow [Russia], August 4 (ANI): The Kremlin on Monday stressed Russia’s responsible stance on nuclear issues, urging caution amid rising nuclear rhetoric following U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement to redeploy two American nuclear submarines in response to comments made by Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, TASS reported.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized the importance of nuclear restraint and downplayed the significance of political statements fueling tensions.
“Overall, of course, we do not wish to be drawn into such a discussion or comment on it. We approach any statements related to nuclear issues with great caution. As you know, Russia holds a responsible position. President Putin’s stance is well known,” Peskov stated.
He reiterated that Russia is firmly committed to nuclear non-proliferation and called on all parties to act with extreme caution when discussing nuclear matters.
“Russia takes the issue of nuclear non-proliferation very seriously. And, of course, we believe that everyone should be extremely careful when it comes to nuclear rhetoric,” Peskov added.
The Kremlin’s comments followed Trump’s Truth Social post in which he said:
“Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev… I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that. Words are very important and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances.”
Medvedev, who served as Russian president from 2008 to 2012 and now holds a key national security role, had earlier responded to Trump with a pointed warning posted on X.
“Trump’s playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10… He should remember 2 things: 1. Russia isn’t Israel or even Iran. 2. Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country. Don’t go down the Sleepy Joe road!”
In a previous statement, Medvedev also invoked Russia’s automated nuclear retaliation system—known as the “Dead Hand”—further escalating the tone of the exchange.
Peskov attempted to decouple the U.S. submarine movements from the ongoing rhetoric, stating that the U.S. deployment was part of ongoing military operations and not a direct response to political statements.
Meanwhile, China has called for restraint, reiterating its opposition to the use or threat of nuclear weapons. The U.S. and NATO have also criticized Russia’s nuclear rhetoric, labeling it “irresponsible.”
The social media feud between two major nuclear powers’ political figures has added to global anxiety over the intensifying geopolitical tensions. (ANI)
