NEW DELHI, Feb. 24 (ANI) — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the extension of the North-South corridor of Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited from GIFT City to Shahpur will enhance connectivity between Ahmedabad and GIFT City.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said the move would also boost commerce and improve ease of living.
“The Cabinet decision on extending the North-South corridor from GIFT City to Shahpur will improve connectivity between Ahmedabad and GIFT City. It will boost commerce and further ‘Ease of Living,’” Modi wrote.
The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister, approved the 3.33-kilometer extension, which will include three elevated stations. The project is expected to be completed in approximately four years at an estimated cost of Rs 1,067.35 crore.
The corridor is aimed at strengthening connectivity between Ahmedabad and the GIFT region. Several multinational companies, educational institutions, and commercial centers located along the proposed route are expected to benefit directly from the enhanced transport link.
The extension will also support daily commuters traveling between Ahmedabad and GIFT City for business, employment, and education, significantly improving network integration and passenger convenience.
Officials said the project is expected to generate around 1,000 jobs during the construction phase. After completion, approximately 250 people will be employed in operations and maintenance, in addition to indirect employment generated through related activities.
The project will be implemented by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited, a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat.
At present, the 68.28-kilometer Ahmedabad Metro network includes Phase I, connecting APMC to Motera Stadium (North-South Corridor) and Thaltej Gam to Vastral Gam (East-West Corridor), and Phase II, linking Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir and GNLU to GIFT City. A total of 53 stations are operational.
Phase I became operational in September 2022, while Phase II was launched in January 2026. The metro system currently records an average daily ridership of approximately 160,000 passengers. (ANI)
