Washington, DC [US], September 16 (ANI): US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that a victory in the ongoing Supreme Court case over his administration’s global tariffs would make America “by far the richest country anywhere in the world,” giving Washington “tremendous power to negotiate.”
Speaking to reporters ahead of his visit to the United Kingdom, Trump credited his tariff policy with helping resolve several international disputes while stressing the stakes of the legal battle challenging his authority to impose duties on imports from around the globe.
“If we win the Supreme Court case, which is the finalisation of tariffs, we will be by far the richest country anywhere in the world… We’ll have tremendous power to negotiate. By using tariffs, I settled seven wars. Four of them were because I was able to do tariffs,” Trump said.
He was referring to a case in the Supreme Court seeking to reverse a lower court ruling that found his administration acted illegally in imposing a series of import taxes, including the “Liberation Day” tariffs announced on April 2, as well as duties targeting China and India.
According to CNN, the Supreme Court last week agreed to hear the challenge to Trump’s wide-ranging tariffs, a cornerstone of his economic strategy. The case focuses on whether a president can use emergency powers to impose tariffs without explicit authorization from Congress.
The court said it will hear oral arguments during the first week of November and will expedite its decision. The tariffs will remain in effect while the case is pending.
The appeal follows an August decision by a federal court invalidating several of the tariffs, ruling that Trump exceeded his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The court concluded that the law does not permit the kind of duties Trump imposed and emphasized that taxing imports is a core power granted to Congress by the Constitution. (ANI)
