Geneva [Switzerland], May 18 (ANI/WAM): The 78th session of the World Health Assembly (WHA78) will take place from May 19 to 27 in Geneva, Switzerland, under the theme “One World for Health”. The assembly will bring together high-level representatives from various countries and stakeholders to tackle current health challenges. This year’s gathering is especially significant as Member States face emerging threats and substantial changes in global health and development.
The chosen theme highlights the World Health Organization’s (WHO) commitment to solidarity and equity, emphasizing the belief that everyone should have an equal chance at a healthy life, even in challenging times.
A key focus of WHA78 will be the Pandemic Agreement, a historic proposal developed through three years of negotiations by the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body, composed of all WHO Member States. The adoption of this agreement aims to safeguard against future pandemics and represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to prevent a repeat of the suffering caused by COVID-19. If approved, this will be the second-ever agreement presented under Article 19 of the WHO Constitution, allowing Member States to establish global health agreements.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, described the assembly as “truly historic”, noting that the Pandemic Agreement could enhance international collaboration on preparedness, prevention, and response to pandemics.
The assembly’s agenda will address approximately 75 items and sub-items, including over 40 resolutions and decisions proposed by the Executive Board during its 156th session (EB156). The discussions will cover various topics related to WHO’s Programme of Work, including the health and care workforce, antimicrobial resistance, health emergencies, preparedness, polio, climate change, and social connections as determinants of health.
