Kiev [Ukraine], July 15 (ANI/MIC Izvestia): Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday signed a law suspending Ukraine’s obligations under the Ottawa Convention, which prohibits the use, stockpiling, production, and transfer of anti-personnel mines.
The move effectively withdraws Ukraine from the treaty, officially known as the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction, which Ukraine had ratified in 2005.
Alongside this decision, Zelensky also signed into law legislation legalizing multiple citizenship in Ukraine.
Announcing the measures on his Telegram channel, Zelensky stated that he had instructed officials to “immediately work out and adopt all by-laws to implement these laws.”
The presidential office did not provide further details on the timeline or the government’s rationale behind suspending the mine ban treaty.
Ukraine has accused Russia of widespread use of anti-personnel mines on Ukrainian territory since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, while international observers have criticized both sides for the deployment of banned weapons in the conflict.
