
New Delhi [India], August 20 (ANI): Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that 1,647.696 km out of the 2,216.7 km border shared with Bangladesh in West Bengal has been fenced. The update was provided in a written reply to questions from BJP MPs Shambhu Sharan Patel and Neeraj Shekhar.
Rai stated that of the remaining 569.004 km stretch yet to be fenced or completed with other border infrastructure, 112.780 km is non-feasible, while 456.224 km is feasible. Of this feasible stretch, land for 77.935 km has already been handed over to the executing agency. Land acquisition for the remaining 378.289 km is ongoing, with 148.971 km yet to be initiated by the State Government and 229.318 km in various stages of acquisition.
The Centre is taking measures to expedite land acquisition, including regular meetings and reviews with the State Government. Payments for timely land acquisition have been made for 181.635 km of the border.
Rai further noted that illegal infiltration into West Bengal over the past three years, from January 1, 2023, to July 31, 2025, totals 3,964 cases.
The total length of the India-Bangladesh border is 4,096.7 km, spanning West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram. (ANI)
