Tehran [Iran], March 17 (ANI): Iranian state media outlet Press TV on Tuesday shared first-person view footage of a drone flying over the US Embassy compound in Baghdad.
The development follows reports that the US Embassy and a hotel in Baghdad were targeted by drones earlier in the day, with video appearing to show air defenses engaging a projectile near the embassy, CNN reported.
The Majnoon oil field in southern Iraq also came under attack, a spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of Iraq’s armed forces said, according to the US broadcaster.
In a post on X, Press TV described the drone as flying like a “free bird” over the embassy compound and claimed that an Iraqi resistance group released the footage showing the drone operating without triggering air defense systems.
Meanwhile, Anadolu Agency reported, citing an unnamed security source speaking to Shafaq News Agency, that four drones attempted to target the US Embassy in Baghdad. Iraqi air defenses intercepted and shot down all of them before they reached their targets, the source said.
The report added that one drone fell on Abu Nuwas Street, while another landed near the embassy within the Green Zone.
Iraq’s Ministry of Interior confirmed that a drone fell on the Al-Rasheed Hotel early Tuesday local time, CNN reported.
“The ministry wishes to clarify that, after specialized forensic teams conducted an on-site and technical inspection, it was found that a drone had struck the upper fence of the hotel, without resulting in any loss of life or significant material damage,” the ministry said in a statement.
Videos geolocated by CNN showed an explosion near the US Embassy in Baghdad. Other footage showed a projectile consistent with a drone impacting near the embassy, while air defense systems engaged another projectile about 600 meters from the compound.
Multiple explosions were reported across Baghdad, with at least four people killed in an air raid on a building used by an Iran-backed group, according to Al Jazeera, citing witnesses and security sources.
The strike in the Jadiriya district followed explosions near the US Embassy compound in the heavily fortified Green Zone. Verified footage showed fire and smoke rising from the area, while additional clips captured air defense systems intercepting drones overhead.
On Monday, the US Embassy and Consulate in Iraq issued a Level 4 travel warning for the country. (ANI)
