Bogota [Colombia], March 24 (ANI): Several people are feared to have lost their lives and dozens were injured after a military plane crashed shortly after takeoff in southern Colombia, The New York Times reported, citing authorities.
According to Colombia’s defense minister, Pedro A. Sanchez, the accident involved a Hercules aircraft that crashed while departing from Puerto Leguizamo as it transported troops.
He expressed profound sorrow over the incident, stating that military units have been deployed to the crash site. However, the exact number of casualties and the cause of the crash have not yet been officially determined.
Citing El Tiempo, Colombia’s largest newspaper, The New York Times reported that the aircraft was carrying at least 120 people, according to an unnamed source.
In a post on X, the Colombian Aerospace Force confirmed the deaths of six crew members who lost their lives in the line of duty.
However, Reuters later reported that the death toll had risen significantly, with at least 66 fatalities reported by Monday evening, citing two military sources. (Reuters)

Following the accident, Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodriguez offered condolences to the victims.
“My solidarity and condolences to the people and Government of Colombia for the unfortunate plane crash that occurred in Puerto Leguizamo. From Venezuela, we send a fraternal embrace and our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured,” she said.
The incident comes shortly after a Bolivian Air Force Hercules aircraft crash in February that left dozens dead and several others injured. (ANI)
